Traditional and Modern Views on Lifelong Learning

Traditional Music in Cambodia

The views on Lifelong learning have been changed from one generation to another. In scientific management period, lifelong learning is not much taken into consideration except how to make people fully work and to earn profits for the organizations. However, during human relation period, lifelong learning has been much considered especially in the information age. In relation these changes, two different views on lifelong learning emerged, and these are:
A. Traditional view on learning
1. The teacher is the source of knowledge.
2. Learners receive knowledge from the teacher.
3. Learners work by themselves.
4. Tests are given to prevent progress until students have completely mastered a set of skills and to ration access to further learning.
5. All learners to the same thing.
6. Teachers receive initial training plus ad hoc in-service training.
7. Good learners are identified and permitted to continue later education.
B. Modern view on Lifelong learning
1. Educators are guides to sources of knowledge.
2. People learn by doing.
3. People learn in groups and from each other.
4. Assessment is used to guide learning strategies and to identify pathways for future learning.
5. Educators develop individualized learning plans.
6. Educators are lifelong learners. Initial training and ongoing professional development are linked.
7. People have access to learning opportunities over a lifetime.
