Some people may confuse between a vision statement and mission statement. As I have already explained in the text of how to write a good vision statement that is related to answering the question “where the organization will go”, whereas a good mission statement is concerned with “what & how the organization will reach that goal, why the organization exists or what is your organization’s progress? In particular, a good mission statement should cover the following ideas:
A. Characteristics of a good mission statement
(1). A good mission statement must be short & clear. That means a good mission statement must not be complicated or written in a long sentence which leads to confusing.
(2). A good mission statement must be memorable. Memorable means to be easy to understand and put into practice.
(3). A good mission statement must be inspiring. Inspiring means to fill someone with interest and enthusiasm. A good mission statement should be written with the forms of advertising styles, and they have to be attracted by the readers.
(4). A good mission statement must be market-focused. That means it has to be relevant to who will be the customers, what services will be, or what values will be provided to the customers.
(5). A good mission statement must answer the question “What you want to be remembered for?”
B. Criteria for creating a good mission statement
(1). A good mission statement is required to share the ideas from all the people in the organization.
(2). A good mission statement is required to input all the information and then synthesize or analyze.
(3). A good mission statement is required to make into processes (BDA: Before, During, & After)
Here is the example of a good mission statement of Google company: To organize the world information & make it universally accessible and successful.
